Antioxidants help protect our body from free radicals. Free radicals are things that attack our cells and are found in fried foods, smoke, pollution, etc.

There are three cancer fighting "All Stars":

1) Cartenoids- They give fruits and veggies their colors. There are more than 600 of these out there.  Cartenoids prevent free radicals from forming.  Here are Dr. Oz's three favorites:
     a) Yellow Squash- 1 1/2 cups per week- Can help
          prevent lung cancer.
     b) Carrots- 1 cup daily- Can help prevent kidney
          cancer.
     c) Persimmons- 2 Fruits per day- Can help prevent
         stomach cancer.

2) Isothiocyanates- They help cells produce more antioxidant enzymes that intercept free radicals.  There are more than 1,000 isothiocyanates and most are found in green leafy vegetables. It is important to not boil these vegetables because it will destroy the isothiocyanates. Instead, substitute for other items in your salad, steam or saute them. Also, active chewing releases more cancer fighting antioxidants. Here are Dr. Oz's favorites they help fight ovarian cancer. Eat 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked a day :

Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Swiss Chard, Chicory, & Parsley

3) Flavonoids- They protect the body indirectly by helping our metabolize and creates uric acid in the blood stream which neutralizes free radicals.  Flavonoids are also known to prevent lung cancer. There are more than 6,000 different types. The best sources are found in bright colored foods. Here are Dr. Oz's favorites:

Raspberries, Kumquats (2-3 a day), & Red Cabbage (1/2 cup a day)

Other tips to boost your daily in-take of antioxidants:

Tea: Dunk your tea bag, once it's wet the dunking effect releases more antioxidants. Also, don't add milk because it will neutralize the antioxidants.  Instead, add lemon to give it an antioxidant boost.

Nuts: Eat your ground nuts (like peanuts) roasted. It increases the antioxidants by 20% or more.  If roasting tree nuts do not exceed 350 degrees or else it will destroy their healthy fats.

Veggie Combination- Combine Tomatoes and Broccoli and the combination will give you even more cancer fighting benefits

Salsa- Combine with guacamole; Adding avocado helps your body absorb lycopene 4x's as much and increase absorption of beta carotene by 2 x's.

Ginger: The Super Power Spice

Forms: Powdered, Whole Fresh, Dried, Pickled, Crystalized, Preserved and Plant
